Quirky Nerdy Heroine

“I don’t just wear the nerdy shirts and shoes. I have nerdy blood, and a nerdy heart.”

It hurts me to review this book. How could I not love a character that says something like that? It’s something I would say! I loved our geeky heroine Sera. Her quirkiness, plethora of geek know-how and love of it made her a character that I really liked and could connect to. Little Matty was also a joy to read about. A total sweetie who deserved to be loved and coddled. It doesn’t take Sera very long at all to fall in love with him and it didn’t take me long either.

Then there’s the bad. Hunter annoyed the hell out of me. I don’t remember the last time I read a character that had so many bipolar issues. It was like whiplash. He was an ass for a good portion of the book and I don’t think he deserved Sera and Matty. He also had way too many issues. I understand having Diabetes is horrible. It’s your own body working against you but the entire book turned into a “feel sorry for me because I have this disease” rant that aggravated me. He had some redeeming qualities and then, he ruined it in one sentence. One sentence and my entire view of him changed. I swear, I wanted to slap him. By the end, those words kept playing in my head and any love for him was thrown out the window.

My biggest problem though, was the lack of editing. Soooo many words either missing or misspelled. Holy moly. I couldn't believe how bad it was. Then there are the plot holes. The entire book became all about Hunter when Sera is also dealing with issues that were forgotten. She’s been belittled for her weight all her life and yet, it’s never brought up in conversation with Hunter as to why she has insecurities. Her family has made her into the character that she is but nothing happens with this part of the story. There’s also the fact that her job is mentioned as something she doesn’t like to do and that she should change and do something else and it fizzles. I finished the book going “but what happened with…” and that’s never a good thing.

I just wish the writer had an editor or even beta readers that could have caught this and brought them up. Maybe it's just the bad part of being an editor that had me cringing so much. It physically hurts me to see the errors.
This book had so much good but it is weighed down by the equal amounts of the bad. It was so hard to review this when I liked the heroine so much. She’s a fellow geek and I loved that about her. She has such a big heart and she should have been the star of the book but she’s overshadowed by Hunter.

Would I buy this author’s books again? I totally would. There’s a HUGE amount of potential for this to be a five star read. I loved the author’s voice, I loved the heroine and I loved Matty. The levity of the story was heavily weighed down by Hunter’s darkness and just needs a little more balancing.

Yes. I felt that so called thing that, Drew Barrymore said as Josie Geller with this book and I din't wanted it to end. (It was that good)

I felt myself be the amazing geek-Greek, Sera Delos. Which is pretty awesome on my account, I got to discover through her the badass awesomeness there is, to being a nerd. Not that I’m not a nerd, which in my case I’m nerd-ish, but that’s irrelevant right now.

But back to the point is that Never Been Kissed by C.M. Kars is Sexy, Seductive, Witty and Plain Fun! I can’t remember the last book that made want to kickass with my Chuck Taylor’s or to grow a backbone and be simply nerdy with the books I adore. And this is what this story is about. To accept who you truly are with insecurities and all, no matter how broken you seem to be, or how silly you must look in front the whole world by being passionate to something that makes your heart skip a beat or even make your heart dance. But better yet, to simple love yourself, accept your chance at happiness, at love too and of course your shot at romance.

Sera Delos story will enthrall you to the end and don’t get me to start on the SexGod of Hunter McLaine! But wrapping it up Never Been Kissed by C.M. Kars is a MUST READ! You won’t waste your time and I assure you next time you see Tom Hiddleston dressed as Loki Laufeyson you won’t resist grinning. In fact you will wish that you own your own pair of Loki’s underwear saying: Kneel Before Me! ;)

Such a great story with so much heart!

Can I just say that my nerdy heart is so happy with this book?!?!

I love how much I related to Sera and her love of all things superhero (Batman will always be the best)! She was sweet and funny. She was also sassy and spoke her mind. She has no idea what to think when she comes face to face with Hunter.
Seeing as Sera has never been kissed, she doesn't know how to take Hunter intense presence. She can't believe that this hunk of a man could possibly find her and all her quirks attractive. But he does:)
There are some serious topics in this book,as well, and I applaud the author for letting readers get a glimpse into the world of diabetics.
Also, Matty might just be the cutest kid ever! I kinda want to adopt him for myself! Haha!

Sera and Hunter do not have an easy love story, but who really does?! This was a cute book and I can't wait for the next one:)

Return to Greatness

I'm only just getting back into Spider-Man after a few years away. I'm still catching up on "Superior Spider-Man" so this issue's offer of a clean jumping on point was too good to pass up.

In short, this is really good stuff. *Doctor* Peter Parker is back and still trying to get his bearings. Doc Ock left Peter plenty of little landmines that he's going to have blow up in his face and this issue not only wastes no time in setting those up, one hits Peter hard by issue's end. We also get little bits about what's going on in regards to Peter's longtime foe Electro, Black Cat, Miguel O'Hara, and how the Avengers will react to all of this. Also, the famous Parker Luck returns in hilarious fashion.

As for the creative team, I've been a fan of Ramos since his days on "Impulse" at DC. Energy is one of his strong points and he brings plenty of that. As for Dan Slott, he might be controversial, but I've yet to be let down by anything of his that I've read. His love of Spider-Man is easy for a reader to sense and I love that he's willing to take risks with the characters.

All in all, this is a fun, exciting, and accessible comic. If you're looking for good Spider-Man look no further.

Spectacularly Amazing

Great comic coming out of Superior Spider-Man. It takes place directly after S. Spider-Man. It has many great short stories that show what's been going on in Spider-Man's neck of the woods. Along with that, you also get Inhumans #1. Overall, it's both a great buy and read.

Here memories of his mother's murder and other childhood traumas arouse his latent schizophrenia. Spider tells his own story in the form of a secret journal, and hallucination sometimes displaces reliable narrative. Since events of the past and present unfold simultaneously, the book skillfully maintains two levels of suspense. We wonder what happened to Spider as a child and what this past suffering will lead him to do. As in many stories by Poe, McGrath's portrayal of a diseased mind evokes disquiet but also voyeuristic fascination.

NEVER MIND HIS PARLOUR....

...take a step into Spider's mind -- and after you do that, you'd better pray that the door didn't slam shut behind you. You're definitely going to want a way out -- this is a pret-ty scary place.
Of the three novels and one book of short stories I've read by Patrick McGrath, this, I believe, is his masterpiece. As Spider narrates his story -- in an almost-torrential syntax that in itself reveals a lot about him -- the reader is inexorably drawn further and further into the mind of a man who is slipping away before our eyes. Spider is hanging on to the ledge of reality by his fingernails, while events conspire to take their turn trodding on his fingers. His thoughts and fears are as real to us as if they were our own. His world -- more-or-less present-day London -- seems as alien to us as a Martian landscape. Everyday people, events, objects and places leap out of the mist at him with frightening intensity -- we feel our breath and our pulse quicken repeatedly as he/we attempt to deal with the ever-more threatening reality of daily life in a halfway house, as images and ghosts from the past intermingle with pieces of the present, and it gets harder and harder to tell one from the other.
McGrath is, at the core, a master story-teller. His interest in the psychological most likely stems from his father's work at Broadmoor Hospital in England, where he grew up. All of his works share an eye for detail, and the care he takes in doing his homework is very apparent. This book is one of the most compelling, captivating and frightening portraits of madness I have ever read -- and it's thoroughly entertaining as well. It's staggering how much power McGrath has been able to cram into this slim volume -- without crowding out a fine story, told with a uniquely fractured clarity and in an unforgettable tone.
The reader is also encouraged to check out a couple of his other fine novels: ASYLUM and THE GROTESQUE. The former is one of the most unusual love stories I've ever run across, and the latter will surprise and reward you with its combination of suspense and wickedly funny humor.
I'll take Patrick McGrath, a true modern master of the Gothic style, over any of the mass-producing 'scary novel' writing machines (who are so in vogue) any day. The quality of his work will surely stand the test of time. I would suggest not reading any of these with the light off, but that would be difficult, would it not...

Trapped in a Spider web

This is my third Patrick McGrath's novel and my favourite so far. I've read `Asylum' and `Dr. Haggard's Disease' . The first is a haunting and dark love story --quite different, and very touching--, the second is interesting, however I don't know what happened, but I couldn't click with the book. But `Spider' became my favourite, and it is unforgettable to me.
It is a story of man, named Dennis `Spider' Cleg, a man who lives in a kind of halfway house for the mentally ill in London. As he is both protagonist and narrator, we are never sure of what he is talking about. Maybe things happened the way he says, maybe he is alucinating. Who knows? He is a man with mental problems that is followed by the image of his father killing his mother and bringing a whore to substitute for her. And we learn all that happened from Spider's sick mind. Until the surprising end.
I highly recommend this novel to readers who like dark thrillers, with psycological undertones. The characters are very well developed. Spider is a human being as any other, we can easily understand what happened to this man that led him to be the way he is.
