Practice makes perfect

I've heard the phrase practice makes perfect all my life. It's what my parents always told me when they forced me to practice piano between lessons. It only makes sense that it translates over into test taking as well. The problem is, I don't take tests on a daily basis. While I'm certainly grateful for that fact, when I DO have to take tests, they seem daunting and very hard overall. When this important test popped up on my radar, I knew I had to be ready. And if practice makes perfect, then I wanted to practice. At first, I wasn't sure how I was going to do that, but then I found these practice questions so I grabbed them and got to work. The practice tests included in this guide really helped me not only see what types of things I would see on the test, but also to understand some of the material better. I was able to quiz myself and see which areas needed more work and what I already knew. Once I practiced enough and got good at many of the tests, I almost started enjoying taking them. I knew once I went into the real test that while I may not be perfect, I was certainly better off then I would have been had I not had so much practice.

I returned this purchase. I was looking for a study guide for the current test which as I understand is based on the DSM 5. The book refers to the DSM 4 TR. only. I think that this book ( as well as others on Amazon) are out of date.

Mr. Khan, who has authored 14 books in diverse fields, has a graduate degree in engineering and an MBA. He has taught many IT, SAP, and data warehousing courses at seven schools including the University of California Extensions (Berkeley and Santa Cruz/Silicon Valley).

A not-so-simple introduction to the subject

Delivered in question and answer format, this book tries to guide the reader through the maze of business intelligence, including data warehousing, BI cubes, ETL and other such esoterica. I wouldn't call it "simplified", but it is a pretty good introduction. The material is covered in enough detail to be useful, at the expense of losing the reader sometimes. In spite of its question and answer format, this needs careful reading.

Useful for beginner audience

Little things like page 101's listing of Windows and .NET as distinct "platforms" (Unix, Linux and "mainframe operating systems" also feature in the list) or page 159's dodgy description of ROLAP make me question the author's hands-on experience with data warehouse implementation. If Mr. Khan has indeed "consulted for major corporations on data warehousing and business intelligence", he must have dealt with "softer" or higher-level matters. The book feels exactly like a book by a consultant or an academic: organized (although in this case moderately padded with a number of self-repeats), methodical, big on bullet-point lists and definitions, encyclopaedic, useful to a novice, but not useful to practitioner. Add "out of date" to the list of complaints: the book's substitution of OLAP for "business intelligence" is just one of the things that make the book feel as if it were written in late nineties. Repeating myself, the book will be useful to a beginner - offering an introduction to (a) data warehouse design, (b) OLAP, (c) project management; you can easily find better books on (a), but here you get a 3-in-1 - but people who have been building databases will not lose anything if they pass.

Excellent toolkit for parents

I read Smart Parenting Revolution by Dawna Markova a few years ago, and it helped me immeasurably with my two children, both of whom were struggling in public schools. I just picked up I AM Smart and it's a quick, easy read with so many practical tools and different perspectives for understanding my children, and what to do about it to support them in school. Highly recommend for all parents with school-age children.

QUICKSTART

If you never read the material at the front of your books anyway, and if you’re in a hurry to begin and only want to read one paragraph, here it is:

Most chapters in this book are independent. Start with any one and look through it. Use the index extensively. Decide if you are going to work problems in that topic. If so, solve as many problems in that topic as time allows. Don’t stop studying until the exam. Start right now! Quickly! Good luck.

However, if you want to begin a thorough review, you should probably try to find out everything there is to know about the PE exam. The rest of this Introduction is for you.


IF YOU ARE A PRACTICING ENGINEER

If you are a practicing engineer and have obtained this book as a general reference handbook, it will probably sit in your bookcase until you have a specific need.

However, if you are preparing for the PE examination in environmental engineering, the following suggestions may help.

  • Find out the current edition of this book. You might be reading this book long after it was published. Newer editions mean that older editions are no longer appropriate for the current exam. Newer editions mean that the codes, standards, and regulations on which the exam is based are not represented in the older edition, that the exam body of knowledge has changed, and/ or the exam format and policies have changed. New editions are published for a reason, and it’s not reasonable for you to expect the older edition to serve your needs when it is out of date.

FOR NON-UNDERGRADUTE ENGINEERS

My undergraduate was in Geography. My Masters in Environmental Engineering. I am not good at math, and formulas with greek letters still make me tense inside. Having said this, here are the books you need to concentrate on to pass this exam the first time.
1. This book. It needs to be your centerpiece, your touchstone. You need to know this book, and especially the tables and appendices. Location, Location, Location is so important, know where everything is in this book. Make this book part of your life. Travel with it, sit with it, take it on your 10 minute coffee breaks... just know this book.
2. Next: 101 Solved Engineering Problems. This book has the most realistic PE Problems. Do them all. They are categorized by type so you must write the page from Lindeberg next to the problem in this book for quick cross reference. This is your best book for quickly finding an example of what you are trying to solve on the test.
3. Next: Lindeberg Practice Problems. Also good, but not as good as 101 (above). Use this as a reference. It aligns with the Lindeberg Hard Cover for quick cross reference.
4. Last: Environmental Engineering Practice Exams (Schneiter). Do all the problems. It looks like a Lindeberg, but it isn't. Like 101 Solved Problems, you must cross-reference the problems with there topic location in Lindeberg Hard Cover. Questions are not in a particular order (4 practice exams, level about right), but questions are in random order which makes look-up during exam tough.
5. Environmental Law Handbook (Sullivan). Need this for the regulatory, and statutory questions. Find a good OSHA book too.
6. Last: Environmental Engineering Calculations (Lee & Lin). This book is expensive and big, but it is a good fail safe. What I liked about it is it presented things differently than Lindeberg, in case I didn't understand where Lindeberg was coming from.
7. I HATE CONVERSIONS, and the test is full of them. If you hate conversions, buy Lindeberg's Engineering Conversions. It is a time saver.
You do not have time to use even all of these references. Just don't show up with a heck of a lot more. You need to drill, drill, drill, on the problems so when you see them on the PE, it is like regurgatation. Lindeberg Hard Cover will covers everything you need to know... this book is your centerpiece!

2nd Edition is Worse than 1st Edition

I borrowed my boss' first edition of this book before I bought the second edition. After reviewing each in good detail, it's clear that they are exactly the same content, except for one thing: the 2nd edition has no problems at the end of each chapter. Obviously the publisher wants you to buy the companion problems book. So, to be clear: the 2nd edition is worse than the 1st edition. Even by textbook industry standards, that's pretty bad!

Yet, you need this book for the PE. So buy a gently used copy of the first edition and you'll both save money and get a superior product.

Primary reference for PE exam

I took three books to the Environmental PE exam - this one, the Civil Engineering reference, and the provided (downloadable) FE reference book. The Environmental PE exam was 100 questions. I used the Environmental reference for about 75 of the questions. I needed the Civil Reference for about 15 questions. I needed the FE reference for two of the questions. There were about 8 questions where I did not know where to look for the formulae, so had to guestimate.

    Avi Friedman began his architectural studies at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy, received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Israel Institute of Technology (first in class/cum laude) and his Master in Architecture from McGill University in Montreal. He received his doctorate in 1987 from the Université de Montréal. In 1988, he cofounded the Affordable Homes Program at the McGill School of Architecture, where he is a Full Professor. Dr Friedman is the recipient of the Progressive Architecture Research Award, the J.-Armand-Bombardier Prize for Technological Innovation and the Manning Innovation Award of Distinction. Education, Teaching, and Research. He has authored ten books on housing related issues, for McGraw-Hill, Wiley, Penguin, and Princeton Architectural Press, which were well-received by reviewers and the public. He also authored numerous peer-reviewed articles for academic journals on subjects ranging from prefabrication and construction technology to suburban planning and space management, and has contributed chapters to other books. Dr Friedman is a member of the editorial board of architectural journals and has authored research monographs and articles in trade publications in the USA and Canada. Between 2000 and 2008 he wrote a bi-monthly syndicated column on housing for the Canwest chain of daily newspapers with a readership of over two million.

    Jill Easton has returned to her husband after a seven year separation. Things seem to be going well for them Her husband, Ben, has even allowed Neil to return to their bed. Ben had fought his attraction to Neil, but finally he gave in and he and Neil also became lovers. Everything was great for Jill except that she missed her previous lovers, Logan and Judah, that she had spent that lost 7 years with. She was mated to Logan and Judah was he father of her younger daughter.
    When Ben finally met Jill's two daughters he knew that the oldest was his child and that another man had fathered the younger child. He took one look at the younger child and knew that it was Judah's daughter. He was super angry about that as Judah was his competition in his mind.
    When Jill becomes aware of Ben's spanking fetish she knows that the BDSM relationship needs to be examined. After some issues rise, Ben calls Logan in to help train Jill. Jealous, Judah comes up with a plan to make Ben want to share Jill with him. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work and things go wrong. The four men must work together in order to heal Jill.
    This is well written with hot sexy characters and an interesting story line. There are plenty of sexual situations, definitely for readers 18 and over.

    Royally Screwed was packed with deception, deceit, suspense, thrills and loads of karma that will reel you in from the 1st page until the very last. The storyline is well written and you will be held hostage while reading and trying to find out how it all plays out for each character.

    You will feel as if you personally know each character or at least someone like them. Kennedy's character could easily be any woman that has given her all in a relationship but doesn't feel as if she gets it back in return. And Deo is every man that has neglected his relationship for to long..and has to do everything in his power to save it once he realizes what he stands to lose. Now Daddy a/k/a AJ was a chcharacter that I did not see coming but definitely added shock value to the story.

    All in all this was a great read for a rookie author. I would definitely recommend R.S. and say that you will NOT be disappointed. Great job!!

    That ending had me like whoa and crying laughing! I definitely wasn't expecting that! Kennedy made the decision to seek attention elsewhere once Deo started neglecting her. She had no trust in him whatsoever. Deo, even though he was a good dude, looked out for Tamera and that only caused more problems in his relationship. I didn't like Tamera because she was being selfish and because she messed up, she felt Deo should've accepted her back like it was nothing. Now AJ took me by surprise. And just for being hardheaded Kennedy got herself caught up. I never would've thought Daddy would turn out to be who he was! Like damn Kennedy! I see why she stayed flirting with Jojo now. I was questioning the pregnancy at first but that got answered quickly. I feel bad for Deo though because no matter who Kennedy was doing what with, she was still wrong. Great job Nicki! Can't wait to start part 2.

    I enjoyed this book and its nice little twist. I don't want to write too much for fear of giving the story away but all I can do is smh at Kennedy, she was just too darn selfish. I understand women being emotional cheaters ( Kennedy being a cheater is in the description so that's not a spoiler) but goodness. Deo neglected her but wasn't a cheater, I almost want him to have better than Kennedy. I'm hoping part two doesn't take forever to come out because I need answers. Kudos to the author, I'll be reading more of your work as it becomes available.

    I Highly Recommend this Book!

    I have been working with genetic genealogy for five years, and I highly recommend this book! It has everything a beginner needs to know, and has all the topics someone with more experience might need to review now and then. Charts, diagrams, and clear explanations. If you have taken a DNA test and want to get the most from your results, this book will show you how to do that!

    An Owner's Manual for Your DNA

    This 240-page book is the most complete and up-to-date resource on genetic genealogy. While some material is too advanced for raw beginners, you will want this comprehensive book on hand as you work your way through the DNA testing process. Blaine clearly explains all the different DNA types and their individual inheritance patterns. Then he adds lots of supplementary information, including a great list of More Resources. Blaine naturally encourages readers to read his book from start to finish. But not many people read their vehicle owner's manual before taking their new car for a ride. Likewise, you don't need 100% of this knowledge before jumping into the exciting world of DNA testing. Furthermore, each topic will make much more sense when you have your own results to look at. Do read enough to understand the key points. For example, it's important to know that autosomal DNA passes on random selections of each parent's DNA. But you can get by without knowing exactly HOW recombination occurs. The subject of X-DNA inheritance confuses even experienced testers. So just skip that chapter until (and if) you encounter a situation where an understanding of X-DNA is needed. The book is available in both print and Kindle formats. I purchased the print version due to the many excellent tables and illustrations.
