All I can say is WOW...

I'm able to find something I heartily disagree with in every childcare or child discipline book I read. Even in my favorites. But I thought my head was going to fall off I nodded so hard while reading this book. I used to hedge daily on discipline worrying I was "hurting" my kids too much when I had to enforce loss of privileges. This book made me see that all consequences are painful...they are supposed to be. But painful and harmful are not the same thing. Just because my child is temporarily unhappy, that doesn't mean she is permanently scarred. All growth is painful. The flip side to the advice is you should balance your enforcement of consequences with empathy, affection, and support. You are neither your child's enemy nor his friend. You are his parent.
I was able to immediately put the good advice to use right away and my family is so much more peaceful! Boundaries really are good for building character, increasing empathy, and as converse as it may sound, strengthening the relationship between you and your children. The authors are both psychotherapists and devout Christians. I thought the Christian bent might annoy me but the scriptures quoted were used sparingly and only enhanced the eloquence and relevance of the text.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to friends and relatives, Christian and secular. Buy this book and you will walk around thinking "I know which boundaries HIS/HER parents didn't enforce as a child." What an enlightening book!

Boundaries With Kids

This book has helped my husband and I to not only be on the same page with our dicipline methods but also to really focus on how our 3 kids behaviors right now in the present will affect their future when they are on their own. It has helped us to set boundaries for them and is also teaching our kids to learn to set firm boundaries on their own with their lives. I had yet to find a book on raising children that is so clear and effective and really guides you through how to be an effective parent for the good of your kids future. I also highly recommend the book "Raising Great Kids" which is by the same authors.

This book changed our lives!

At age 13, nothing had worked. My son was stubborn, uncooperative, lying & lazy - at best. My fiancee threw up his hands in disgust & told me I was on my own with this problem. Reading this book and implementing its contents as I went along, has made all the difference in the world! Seeing all I had done wrong in the past (to help create this monster), and having guidelines to follow to correct the set bad patterns - priceless! The book is written clearly & matter-of-factly. It shows where I contributed to my son's poor behavior. It shows compassion for how difficult it is to change our patterns. This book is worth every penny - worth every moment. I now have a cooperative, responsible, cheerful, loving son! & he has a mom who is firm, loving, and VERY happy!

Yahiya Emerick is a prolific author on topics related to religion, interfaith dialogue and the Islamic faith. The Ultimate Study Version of the Qur'an

This is the ultimate study version of the Qur'an in the English language. Yahiya Emerick has given us a superlative translation of the Qur'an into a crisp, clear, and easy to read, modern English.

Interspersed throughout the text in a different font for clear differentiation from the Qur'anic text, Emerick provides enlightening vignettes that describe the historical context in which various passages of the Qur'an were revealed and that lead to a much fuller and deeper understanding of the Qur'anic passage under discussion. In addition, over 2,600 footnotes provide a wealth of commentary (tafsir) derived from the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, linguistic considerations involving the Arabic language, Arabic poetry, etc. Also supplementing the text are separate essays providing a biography of Prophet Muhammad, a discussion of how to approach the Qur'an, the ahadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) and their sources, the prophets recognized by Islam, Muhammad's lineage, chronologies regarding the revelation of the Qur'an and the life of Prophet Muhammad, biographies of Muhammad's wives and various of his companions and antagonists, etc.

For any Muslim in America who is not completely fluent in Arabic, for any college student taking a course in Islamic studies or comparative religion, and for anyone who wants a highly readable translation of the Qur'an with in-depth commentary, this is the first and foremost translation that should be gracing their bookshelves.

Superior But Not Perfect

Yahiya Emerick dedicated a big part of his life in creating his expounded translation of the Qur'an. The amount of time spent on research is obvious through his elaborate blocks of background information and footnotes. The "Extended Study Edition" is an excellent resource for extensive research for understanding the history behind the verses and how they were perceived at the time of the revelations. Emerick uses many hadiths [teachings of Prophet Muhammed (peace upon him)] and sunnahs [examples from the Prophet's life] to explain aspects surrounding particular verses.

I was pleased that Emerick disproved many myths about Islam; for examples, the myth that Islam forbids music, and the myth that adoption is unislamic. I disagreed with a few of his footnotes, however. I was particularly disappointed that he upheld the myth that, in Paradise, men will have perpetual virgins "only to please our carnal desires, which will be without restriction..." (n 48). Of course, in Paradise we presumably will be perfected, spiritual beings without sexual lusts. (I certainly do not want to go to a Heaven where people are living with the same unrestrained, sexual immorality as they are today.)

The book lacks user-friendliness on one point, which is that the chapter numbers are not at the tops of pages. In other words, if you opened the book at a random page, you would not be able to tell in which chapter you are reading.

Emerick created an above average translation of the meanings of the Qur'an. He has some fault, however, in grammatical skill and poetic use of the English language; therefore, the literary value falls short of excellence. The translation lacks some elegance as Emerick often misses the tone of the original Qur'an. In translation, reflecting tone is just as important as reflecting the meanings. Although the translation is superior to other English translations, it lacks the perfection that the Qur'an deserves. Still, Emerick is to be commended for a thorough and important contribution.

About the Author
Neil Spiller is Hawksmoor Chair of Architecture and Landscape and Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Greenwich, London. He is the author of Visionary Architecture and Digital Architecture Now. His architectural design work and research has been widely published and exhibited worldwide.

Nic Clear is Head of the Department of Architecture and Landscape, University of Greenwich, where he teaches Unit 15, which specializes in the use of film and animation to generate and represent architectural spaces. He was guest/editor of the AD issue Architectures of the Near Future (2009), and has contributed to the Oxford Handbook of Science Fiction.

Well Done, but Long

This collection of essays provides an interesting lens into the education of today's architects--and what architecture has become as a profession. The book itself is well made and profusely illustrated. The essays are tightly written and stay focused on the topic at hand. It's just a bit much--the book tops out at 350 pages and could have made precisely the same point at half the length.

I love this book for several reasons

Another gem from James Alexander!!! I love this book for several reasons.
Most obviously, the vocab included. Some of the other books were missing a couple of my favorite four letter word combos, and this one covered all of them, and then some. A delightful surprise was seeing 'Bye Felicia'! Not a four letter insult, but perfectly current and fun. I enjoy seeing some of the British combos, expanding my colorful insult horizons is always nice.
Next thing I love: the paper. I cannot stress enough how much I love his black paper. It's thicker and almost velvety feeling, now the back side of the pages are speckled, and makes me think of the night sky with stars. Pretty and soothing. I didn't think his plain black paper could get any better and here he goes one upping himself.
And lastly, the designs to color around the words are nice. Simple, and not overly detailed, but in a good way. Some books are so detailed you have to use ultra fine tips or just pencils. I prefer the vibrant look of marker, personally, and my regular fine tips are often not fine enough for some of those crazy detailed books. Also, I don't have to get out a spot light and magnifying glass to color in these books... which is ideal. I don't find it relaxing to be straining to see what I'm coloring and stressing about possibly coloring out of the lines. So much more relaxing to be able to color without the grade school anxiety of accidentally coloring outside the lines.
Oh, and hey, Christmas is coming up, and any number of other holidays and birthdays, these make great gifts.
So bravo Mr. Alexander! You have proven yourself, yet again. Keep the books coming! I will keep buying them, and spreading the word to everyone who sees them and wants one!

PERFECTION!

I am SO excited to have another James Alexander coloring book! This book has 59 different designs that feature some creative vulgar phrases. Each page is trimmed in black with white speckles which really helps the designs pop. Each phrase is surrounded by fun geometric and floral designs which are so fun to color.

The quality of the book is great. It has nice pages and crisp lines. Perfect for any coloring medium of choice: markers, pencils, etc. Some helpful coloring tips are in the front. In addition to the 59 geometric designs, 9 doodle designs are included which include cute little critters and monsters. You also receive two links for bonus designs to print for both the geometric and doodle designs. Such a great value and amazing work – get this book!

The Very Rev. Father Andre Prevot, of the Society of the Priests of the Heart of Jesus, was a French priest who lived in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His devotional work entitled Love, Peace, and Joy was originally published by R. & T. Washbourne, Ltd. in London as Love, Peace, and Joy: A Month of the Sacred Heart According to Saint Gertrude. Father Prevot wrote it to carry out our Lord s great desire namely, that of making His sacred Heart known and loved throughout the world. It is based on Christ s personal words to St. Gertrude as she herself has recorded in her Revelations. TAN reprinted the book in 1984 and again in 2007.

Our Lord chose St. Gertrude to be the Messenger or Herald of Divine Love, and He guided her as she wrote, so that through her He might make known the secrets of His Heart, and thus draw many hearts to Himself. Jesus said to St. Gertrude, "I wish your writings to be for later times a proof of the tenderness of My Heart, and I will make them a source of grace to many souls. While you write, I will keep your heart near to My Heart, and will instill into it, drop by drop, what you are to say." By following these actual words of Our Lord to St. Gertrude in our daily life, a soul will become enriched with incomparable merit, and will be filled, even in this life, with the profound peace and joy which come from loving the Sacred Heart of Jesus. 203pp. PB. This is a wonderful book of prayers and thoughts by St. Gertrude The Great. I wrote several of her prayers down on cards so I could say them. St. Gertrude follows St. Benedict's Rule so it is very religious. She has wonderful thoughts on the holy souls.

Coherent states, introduced originally by Schrodinger and von Neumann, were later employed by Glauber for a quantal description of laser light beams. The concept was generalized by the author for an arbitrary Lie group. In the last decade the formalism has been widely applied to various domains of theoretical physics and mathematics. The area of applications of generalized coherent states is very wide, and a comprehensive exposition of the results in the field would be helpful. This monograph is the first attempt toward this aim. My purpose was to compile and expound systematically the vast amount of material dealing with the coherent states and available through numerous journal articles. The book is based on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses I delivered at the Moscow Physico-Technical Institute. In its present form it is intended for professional mathematicians and theoretical physicists; it may also be useful for university students of mathematics and physics. In Part I the formalism is elaborated and explained for some of the simplest typical groups. Part II contains more sophisticated material; arbitrary Lie groups and symmetrical spaces are considered. A number of examples from various areas of theoretical and mathematical physics illustrate advantages of this approach, in Part III. It is a pleasure for me to thank Dr. Yu. Why are some discourses more politically efficacious than others? Seeking answers to this question, Ty Solomon develops a new theoretical approach to the study of affect, identity, and discourse—core phenomena whose mutual interweaving have yet to be fully analyzed in International Relations. Drawing upon Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory and Ernesto Laclau’s approach to hegemonic politics, Solomon argues that prevailing discourses offer subtle but powerfully appealing opportunities for affective investment on the part of audiences.
Through empirical case studies of the affective resonances of the war on terror and the rise and fall of neoconservative influence in American foreign policy, Solomon offers a unique way to think about the politics of identity as the construction of “common sense” powerfully underpinned by affective investments. He provides both a fuller understanding of the emotional appeal of political rhetoric in general and, specifically, a provocative explanation of the reasons for the reception of particular U.S. foreign policy rhetoric that shifted Americans’ attitudes toward neoconservative foreign policy in the 1990s and shaped the post-9/11 “war on terror.”
