About the Author

ELIZABETH GUZMÁN received her B.A in English from Universidad de Santiago (Chile) and her M.A. in English as a Second Language from West Virginia University, and then pursued doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently the Director of the General Education Program at The University of Iowa, where she has been responsible for designing the GEP hybrid courses. She has extensive experience teaching Spanish and English to foreigners, Spanish Applied Linguistics, and Foreign Language Education at the university level in Chile and the United States. She co-directed the Spanish language program at the University of Michigan for 3 years, directed the Spanish program at Yale University for 5 years, and taught and coordinated the elementary summer language program at Middlebury College, one of the most successful and renowned language immersion programs in the world, for 10 years. Elizabeth is co-author of the first level Spanish textbook Mosaicos, published by Pearson. 

 

PALOMA LAPUERTA graduated from the University of Salamanca, Spain, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She currently is a Associate Professor at Central Connecticut State University, where she teaches Spanish Language and Literature. She has 25 years of teaching experience at higher education institutions around the world, including in Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, and the United States. Dr. Lapuerta is co-author of the first level Spanish textbook Mosaicos, and the Spanish composition text La escritura paso a paso, both published by Pearson.

  

JUDITH LISKIN-GASPARRO earned her Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Iowa, where she also co-directs FLARE (Foreign Language Acquisition Research and Education), which operates an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition. Her research interests include language acquisition during study abroad, the acquisition of narrative skill in a second language, and foreign language program evaluation. She has published extensively on oral proficiency testing, language curriculum and program development, and second language acquisition. She has served as the Associate Editor for Reviews of the Modern Language Journal since 1999. She is a co-author of Mosaicos, as well as the co-editor of the Pearson Professional Library Series. In 1994, she was honored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the Modern Language Journal with the Emma Marie Birkmaier Award for Doctoral Dissertation Research in Foreign Language Education. In 1999, she received ACTFL’s Florence Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education. 

 

MATILDE OLIVELLA DE CASTELLS (late) received her Ph.D. from the University of Havana.  She had over 25 years of teaching experience at Rutgers University and California State University, Los Angeles where she received the University’s Outstanding Professor Award and Merit Award.  She was also the coordinator of second level Spanish at the Middlebury Spanish Summer Language School, a member of the Spanish Development Committee of the College Entrance Examination Board, and Chairperson of the Advanced Placement Committee.  She had given presentations at the AATSP and ACTFL conventions and conducted numerous workshops at universities around the country.  Professor Castells had authored and co-authored several Spanish texts, including La lengua española and the first level Spanish textbook Mosaicos, both from Pearson.

Needs a little more

Just got this story free and finished it in no time. It's a small bite of erotica, seeming more like a very short scene ripped from a longer work.

I loved the hero, all rough and tumble looking with the longish brown hair, deep brown eyes, and tats all over that hard body. Brody is very yummy, especially if you go for the bad boy who's really a sweetheart.

This short has a good idea and hero behind it, but at 232 locations, it's too brief, not allowing me enough time to get warmed up. I would love to see this made into a more developed short story.

A woman gets a tattoo and some hot sex from a sexy tattoo artist.

Inked is simply an erotic contemporary short story that doesn't have a deep story line or fleshed out characters, but I didn't really expect that (ya know...because it's a short story). I thought the scope of the story was right for the size. It is only about 12 pages of actual story text and, as expected, focuses on the sexual encounter. However, I did end up getting a little more than I expected. I really liked that in those 12 pages (especially the beginning and end) it almost felt like the start of an erotic romance, not just an erotica short story. A lot of erotic romances start out with the lust first and the love and romance later, and it felt like that is where the story could have gone if it was extended. I'm not saying it should be longer but I liked that there was a spark of potential romance.

I think the set up to the story at the beginning was done well too. It didn't just jump right into the sex, but gave the characters a chance to meet and spark an attraction that leads to their encounter.

One issue I did have is the amount of typos. I counted about 12-14 and for a short story of approx 5,000 words or 12-ish pages that is quite a bit. I think another proofing pass would be helpful to the ratings.

A very sexy and descriptive short story. I read "Inked" in about twenty minutes. I liked the premise of this novella but it could be improved with a little more editing.

A must for learning how to love your natural hair and grow it!!

I have worn weaves and braids all my life. I was never taught how to properly care for my hair as a young girl. Because of this, and out of frustration of dealing with it natural, I damaged it repeatedly by applying relaxers and color over many many years.
Finally becoming fed up that my hair simply would not grow past a certain length - I started to do some research on African American natural hair care. That's when I came across this book. After reading it I felt like my eyes were finally opened to how to properly take care of my hair. Audrey does an excellent job of including the science of hair, balancing the hair with certain products, knowing how to trim your hair, using the proper combs, and so much more.
I don't care how the media portrays I should wear my hair anymore. I am not interested in weaves or relaxers anymore. I am now proud of my hair and the versatility it brings to. I am just mad I didn't read the book sooner.

Great book to read if you need some education on how to take care of your hair and grow it.

Every black woman should read it

I love this book and tried to tell all of the black women I know about it. It does way more that just recommend products, which its gives an extensive list of. It tells you about the science of OUR hair and how it is structurally different. There is so much misinformation on Youtube, blogs and internet searches about what to use and which method is the best. She gives you a way to figure out what will work best for your hair. If there is too much protein or moisture, why it breaking. Why is important to actually shampoo and deep condition. Routine is our friend. She even goes over hair care for the little ones. They don't need all of those childrens' products and special shampoos. Bought it as a E-book, plan to get it as a hardback so I can keep it around for a while. Something I plan to read again.

Great Book!

I recommend every sister that struggles with their hair get this book!
It has given me so much knowledge about our hair and has helped with me and my daughter's hair so much.
Audrey gives essential information that teaches how our hair works, then offers detailed instructions on how to care for it.
She also has product recommendations and shows you how to shop for your own hair products.
I've read quite a few hair books and none have come close to the information provided in this book not to mention when I was in high school (many yrs ago) I studied cosmetology and still didnt learn as much as I did about "our hair" that i did from this book, mostly because the courses were focused on caucasian hair - every mannequin had caucasian hair, every book referred to caucasian hair with exception of a short lesson on "curly" hair but nothing remotely close to a in depth education of coily kinky african american hair.
Again that was in the 90's, so I'm sure nowadays there are cosmetology schools that emphasize more on all hair types BUT the average sister shouldnt need cosmetology school to be able to understand and maintain her hair.
This book gives you the knowledge and understanding you need to have healthy hair and correct years of damage we've done by simply not knowing.

About the Author
Peter M. Magolda is a professor in Miami University’s Student Affairs in Higher Education program. He teaches educational anthropology and research seminars, and his scholarship focuses on ethnographic studies of college students and critical issues in qualitative research.

Jill Ellen Carnaghi has been at Washington University in St. Louis since 1997 and currently serves as an Associate Vice Chancellor for Students and Dean of Campus Life. Prior to Washington University, Carnaghi worked in housing and residence life—from a graduate resident advisor at Michigan State to assistant director at the University of California, Davis, to Director of Residential Life at the University of Vermont. Carnaghi has been involved in professional associations, including serving as president of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and treasurer of the ACPA Educational Leadership Foundation.

The book tells of experiences that new Student Affairs professionals experienced. While a lot of the experiences are in some sense universal, everyone has their own perspectives and experiences before entering the field (especially if they were nontraditional students before graduate school). The book and lessons in this book can help others plan for 'what if' situations such as, "what will I do if I have an advising appointment where a student becomes enraged?" or "what will I do if my current form of self care is not sustainable in the future?" I would recommend this to other new professionals but at the same time be mindful of your past experiences and areas of privilege.
