A practical, step-by-step guide for quickly getting started with Cassandra Query Language

Overview

  • Learn something new in an Instant! A short, fast, focused guide delivering immediate results
  • Covers the most frequently used constructs using practical examples
  • Dive deeper into CQL, TTL, batch operations, and more
  • Learn how to shed Thrift and adopt a CQL-based binary protocol

In Detail

Apache Cassandra is a fault-tolerant, distributed data store that offers linear scalability, allowing it to act as a storage platform for large, high-volume websites. Cassandra Query Language, or CQL, is the default language/method used to access, change, and query the Cassandra database. It is essential to learn how to use CQL since the old RPC-based mechanism is now giving way to CQL-based Cassandra drivers.

Instant Cassandra Query Language serves as a great starting point for anyone who has started working on Cassandra and who wishes to learn its query language, CQL, in a simple, concise, and quick way. It teaches you how to use CQL in an efficient manner and shows you the exact query commands you need to run.

Instant Cassandra Query Language takes you on a journey through Cassandra Query Language. We first introduce CQL and help you to get started with it by installing, configuring, and opening the console. In order to get a quick feel for it before delving deeper into its inner workings, we’ll run some basic read and write commands. After the stage is set, we’ll design and experiment with a simple social media application, explaining the different CQL constructs used along the way.

You’ll also learn some specific skills like how to specify database columns that expire after a certain period of time, how to create batch operations, and more. Since CQL is used as a base for Cassandra drivers, it’s important to explore the usage of CQL via different libraries. You’ll learn how to write client applications over Cassandra in different ways, namely using Thrift and Datastax Java Driver. A listing of high-level clients is also provided that serves as a good starting point for you to explore them further. With this book, you’ll learn everything you’re likely to encounter while working with CQL.

What you will learn from this book

  • Install, configure, and start Cassandra and get to the CQL console
  • Read, write, and delete data using CQL
  • Design a database model for a social media application and use CQL over it
  • Configure CQL operations for secondary indexes, composite keys, collection types, and counter column families
  • Implement TTL, batch operations, and more using CQL
  • Build client applications using CQL

Approach

Get to grips with a new technology, understand what it is and what it can do for you, and then get to work with the most important features and tasks. It’s an Instant Starter guide.

Who this book is written for

Instant Cassandra Query Language is great for those who are working with Cassandra databases and who want to either learn CQL to check data from the console or build serious applications using CQL. If you’re looking for something that helps you get started with CQL in record time and you hate the idea of learning a new language syntax, then this book is for you.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! Waste of money, light on content...
By Richard Bullotta
I first thought it was a joke when this book arrived today. It was thinner than a pamphlet, and turns out, so was the content inside. I wouldn't pay $0.99 for this, much less $24.99. This is far below the quality level I expect from a Packt technical book. It is virtually devoid of useful content and provides only a rudimentary example, with little discussion of real world use of CQL.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

Using CQL in 30 minutes or less
By Sujit Pal
This book took me about 15 minutes to read cover to cover, and covered enough ground for me to start building a Scala/CQL application within 30 minutes. This book is ideal for people who already know SQL and are looking to start working in Cassandra with CQL. Apart from the coverage of basic syntax and data types, I found the case studies of transforming business requirements (such as comments on web pages) into CQL models especially helpful. The book also has some coverage of the Datastax Java driver. Finally, recognizing that Cassandra is a moving target, it contains links for further reading if you wish to explore further.

Overall, I think the book does a great job at doing what it promises to do, ie teach you enough CQL to get started quickly (instantly?). $24.99 for a 40 page booklet does seem a bit steep (as another reviewer has also noted), but I bought mine for $5 (ebook version) direct from PackT during their Christmas sale, so I was more than happy with the price.

Great book to get started with CQL 3.0
By Monica Mathur
A great book to get started with CQL 3.0. Appreciate the way author has shared his hands-on experience with CQL, which is perhaps the real value of this book. This book contains concise information and well-written examples and is surely a good pick.

Best Exercise Book for Players Rated 2000+
By Acklan
I got this book about 6 months ago. I bought it for two reasons. First, it's a Russian Chess School exercise book, which is usually a gurantee for its content quality. Second, although I had noticed this exercise book is written for player rated above 2000+, I still decided to buy it because I believed the gap between Class A and Expert is not that huge, and if it works best for players ELO 2000+, it should also help an ambitious Class A player.

Soon after I began to work on this book, I realized how long and how difficult are the problems in it and I can say figuring out every single problem in this combination book had benifited me 50 times as much as I figuring out a problem from most of the other normal tactics book. After spending hundreds of hours working in this book and cracking nearly 500 problems in it (a total of 750 problems are included in the book), my USCF rating had jumped from low 1800+ to now a little over 2000. I am not saying this is the only exercise book I've been worked on, but it is definitely the only chess book which pushed my calculation skill to a whole new level. As I going over some of my recent games with my NM friend, he pointed out for me that my main strength he can tell from my games is the ability to calculate long variation accurately and clearly recognize my opponent's threat. Throughout my own experience and the tournament games I played against Class A players and experts, I can say two of the main factors which often seperate Class A and Expert are indeed the ability to accurately calcualte long variations and capability to recognize opponent's threat.

I would recommend this combination book to player rated above 2000 and hardwoking Class A players who desire to make an expert. For players rated below 1800, I think Manual of Chess Combinations Volumn 1 and 2, and other books such as John Nunn's puzzle book and Polgar's exercise books are much more appropriate choices. Because most of the problems in this Russian Chess School exercise book require the reader to calculate at least 10 moves, it is clear that only for a player who has built up solid tactics skill and acute tactics vision, he might have the technique to figure out the the long variations and really benifited from working in these tough combinations.

Last but not the least, I want to give a subtle but significant suggestion to those who are getting ready to start to work on this book and those who are working on it: you can either simply look at the problem diagrams in the book or set up your chess pieces to think about the problem, but keep in mind only going over different long variations in your head and don't move the pieces to check them out, because only through this way you can maximize the benifit you gain from working on long variations. After all, the main target for working on a combination book is to improve our own tactics/calculation skill as much as possible, but not just finish the problems themselves as a task.

A must for all want to improve their tactics or combinations!!

A good choice to improve your tactical ability
By Derek Grimmell
There are a lot of tactics books out there. This is one of the best, IF you want to get significantly better at tactics, AND will put in the effort. What makes this book so good? The puzzles are arranged so that they are increasingly difficult as you progress throught the book, and there are no hints or clues as to the specific tactic that leads to a win in each position. This is the best way to train. After all, in a game, a sign doesn't pop up saying "Pin it to win it" or "Back rank weak!" Anyone who works through this book, from cover to cover, will gain the same benefits as an athlete who engages in a couple of months of serious strength training. By the end of the book, you should routinely see positions in your own games where a sixth sense seems to alert you to the presence of a tactic. Your competitors will wonder how you do it.

The Bigness of the World: Stories, by Lori Ostlund

In Lori Ostlund’s debut collection people seeking escape from situations at home venture out into a world that they find is just as complicated and troubled as the one they left behind.

In prose highlighted by both satire and poignant observation, Ostlund offers characters that represent a different sort of everyman―men and women who poke fun at ideological rigidity while holding fast to good grammar and manners, people seeking connections in a world that seems increasingly foreign. In “Upon Completion of Baldness” a young woman shaves her head for a part in a movie in Hong Kong that will help her escape life with her lover in Albuquerque. The precocious narrator of “All Boy” finds comfort when he is locked in a closet by a babysitter. In “Dr. Deneau’s Punishment” a math teacher leaving New York for Minnesota as a means of punishing himself engages in an unsettling method of discipline. A lesbian couple whose relationship is disintegrating flees to the Moroccan desert in “The Children beneath the Seat.” And in “Idyllic Little Bali” a group of Americans gathers around a pool in Java to discuss their brushes with fame and ends up witnessing a man’s fatal flight from his wife.

In the eleven stories in The Bigness of the World we see that wherever you are in the world, where you came from is never far away.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Ostlund's remarkable debut collection deftly navigates the treacherous shoals of decaying relationships in which the protagonists often escape to faraway lands in order to find themselves, or, at the very least, their partners. Fate, for the globe-trotting teacher-entrepreneur of And Down We Went, takes the form of an untimely bird dropping; in Bed Death, it is a Malay waitress who casually takes a sip of orange juice from the narrator's glass. Ostlund's artful prose is playfully complex and illuminating, evocative and unsentimental, as in Upon the Completion of Baldness, in which the narrator's girlfriend returns home from a trip completely bald. Remarks the narrator, the chilly desert air seemed to startle her as though, in that moment, she realized that there was a price to be paid for having no hair, and while I still said nothing, I was happy to see her suffer just a bit. A specific disenchantment inhabits these stories—the disenchantment of the uncompromising romantic confronted with the evaporative nature of love. Each piece is sublime. (Oct.)

Review

The Bigness of the World is simply a stunning collection―every story jewel-crafted and resonant. I read stories to meet people I do not know and have not imagined, but even in that context Lori Ostlund’s people are unique. I begin by thinking that I know these characters or have known them. And then somewhere along the way, they shape-shift and startle me. Over and over again I find myself looking at the world from a fresh perspective―this sharp-eyed, compassionate writer’s rendering of the world I thought I knew. This is a book to remake our imaginary landscape―the kind of book I not only recommend, I advocate. Read this, I want to tell people. You need these stories. You do.

(Dorothy Allison author of Bastard Out of Carolina and Trash)

These sly stories are funny and unpredictable and graced with priceless details you'll carry with you long after the last page is turned. Whether charting the loneliness of youth, or tracing the emotional upheavals of lovers abroad, Ostlund proves to be a wise, charming, and irresistible guide.

(Eric Puchner author of Music Through the Floor: Stories)

Witty and sharp, Ostlund has crafted eleven surprising and often very funny tales that remind us just how vast the world really is.

(Booklist)

Ostlund’s artful prose is playfully complex and illuminating, evocative and unsentimental. . . . Each piece is sublime.

(Publishers Weekly)

Lori Ostlund told an interviewer that short stories have always come natural to her. These precise explorations of longing and loss show that she is already a master of that demanding form.

(Magill Book Reviews)

Insights that arrive too late fill these resonant tales―of abandoned lovers, neglected children, and travelers in foreign lands.

(Coastal Living)

The Bigness of the World wastes no time in establishing Ostlund as one of the new front-runners in Bay Area short fiction.

(San Francisco Magazine)

The characters in Ostlund's book are a picky breed, which is not to say they are unlikeable - to the contrary, they are so well-defined that the reader cannot help but find companionship in their annoyances, their frustrations, their search for meaning in a disparate world . . . The Bigness of the World is an impressive first collection, and I am excited to see what Lori Ostlund does next.

(Kasey Pfab The Corresponder)

From the Inside Flap
In Lori Ostlund's debut collection people seeking escape from situations at home venture out into a world that they find is just as complicated and troubled as the one they left behind.

In prose highlighted by both satire and poignant observation, Ostlund offers characters that represent a different sort of everyman--men and women who poke fun at ideological rigidity while holding fast to good grammar and manners, people seeking connections in a world that seems increasingly foreign. In "Upon Completion of Baldness" a young woman shaves her head for a part in a movie in Hong Kong that will help her escape life with her lover in Albuquerque. The precocious narrator of "All Boy" finds comfort when he is locked in a closet by a babysitter. In "Dr. Deneau's Punishment" a math teacher leaving New York for Minnesota as a means of punishing himself engages in an unsettling method of discipline. A lesbian couple whose relationship is disintegrating flees to the Moroccan desert in "The Children beneath the Seat." And in "Idyllic Little Bali" a group of Americans gather around a pool in Java to discuss their brushes with fame and end up witnessing a man's fatal flight from his wife.

In the eleven stories in The Bigness of the World we see that wherever you are in the world, where you came from is never far away.

The Bigness of the World
By J. Hamby
I'd probably give this a higher rating if I had read this piecemeal. A story, then a bunch of other works by other authors. Then another story in this followed by other material and so on.

Instead I read this in one go. I think the writing style is excellent. And the various plots clever. Except that the focal point in each story in terms of the main character seems way too repetitive. There lacks nuance and enough shift between the works individually. And so I felt I was simply treading water. I suspect that if i read each work, say, in a periodical that presents short fiction, like The New Yorker, over a long period of time, I would look forward to the author's latest.

Lumped together like this I just felt a bit wearied by the end.

a maze...
By Amazon Customer
i'm somewhat disappointed. not in the writing itself, that is exemplary; the level of introspection of the characters & their interactions with each other and the world around them are masterful. & not in the subject matter, as i had no qualms with reading about Minnesota (i've never been, save through this work) or teachers (specifically english teachers) or older lesbian couples in deteriorating relationships. my disappointment lies in the fact that these characters occupy the same space in every story, the same POV, the same irritations & foibles. that despite the title of the collection, i felt in no way that i'd traveled anywhere further than the first couple of stories, that i'd been moved to a different space or been reading about a variety of characters. similar scenes, similar feelings, similar outlooks permeated every story to the point where i felt i'd reread the exact same story by the end of each, which has a feeling of being in a maze and running hopefully down a corridor for an exit, only to come to a dead end. the foreign characters could've been lumped into the same collective whole, with the same collectively strange mysteriousness about them, that they became nothing more than ornamental macguffins to the overall thrust of the stories, which served to go against the title and premise of the work.

alone, the stories are without peer. but as a collection, i cannot fully recommend it. this is an award winning collection, so i expected much more variety in stories while retaining an overall cohesiveness. but this was cohesive to the point of nigh repetition. & while it's pretty much a given that a writer will dutifully "write what they know" when it's this obvious that these stories reflect the author's own experiences, it becomes less like a work of art & more like a regurgitation of her own daily life & experiences. also, & this observation doesn't just limit itself to this author, i cannot understand why academics choose to write mainly about aspects of academia. wouldn't a writer want to write as broad a message as possible, with characters from different walks of life? that you're a writer who is enamored of the english language is obvious in the fluidity and choosing of your words. but to actually create characters that are also writers who delight in the english language? why would an english teacher write about being an english teacher story after story? might as well had written a memoir. not that it isn't interesting for a story or two. but if i wanted to read a novel, i'd have gotten one. that said, while i'm proud to have this book in my library, this gets 3 stars, with a hope that i can read more of ms. ostlund's work as it progresses in the future.

Ultimate Revenge: Everything Has A Cost
By Douglas R. Cobb
If your fiancee was raped, what would be the ultimate revenge against her attacker? Would it be killing him? That is, indeed, a permanent solution, but what if you wanted to make the person suffer for a longer period of time, to make the person have some idea what it's like to feel the sort of pain, suffering, and humiliation your loved one had also felt? Then, the ultimate revenge might be to make the man into an involuntary transsexual, as Ben Nightingale does to Henry Emerson III, the man who raped his fiancee, Erica Lazarus, in Ultimate Revenge Involuntary Transexual, by author and attorney Herman Franck, Esq., and then-go even further.

Ultimate Revenge: Involuntary Transsexual is about what can happen when a man is driven to the very edge by a desire for revenge against the person who raped his fiancee, and puts his plan into action. Ben Nightingale seemingly had the perfect life, a great job as a newspaper reporter, and a beautiful fiancee. One night, while out on a date with her, his world came crashing down around his shoulders in the brief span of just a few minutes. That was the time when she arose from their table to go to the restroom, and she was followed there by the man who would then inject her in the neck with animal tranquilizers and sodomize her.

He wore a condom, which he flushed, to try to destroy any possible evidence that would link him to the crime. But one thing he hadn't counted on was for her to fight back, as she was heavily drugged. She couldn't offer much resistance, but she did manage to whack him once with her elbow, and he angrily punched her in the jaw, leaving the unmistakable imprint of his ring on her cheek. When Henry had finished, he then injected Erica again in her neck because she was starting to come to. He made good his escape, and moments later another woman walked into the restroom and screamed at the sight of Erica naked and passed out in one of the stalls.

When Ben came running and saw his fiancee there, obviously violated in some horrible way, he quickly dialed 911, and took photos of the crime scene and the imprint of the ring as evidence to use later. He tirelessly searched the Internet, as Erica lay comatose in the hospital, in the aftermath of the attack and the emotional and psychological depths it had sunk her to, and eventually, his research paid off. He discovered it was a type of ring that was only made for the class of West Point graduates from 1942, and that there were very few of those at all close to where he lived in California. Of course, the original owner of the ring would likely be too old to be the culprit, but whomever it was could have passed the ring down to his son who then passed it to his son.

The novel becomes a story of what someone does when he has enough evidence collected that he knows who violated his fiancee, but the justice system lets him down. Though an initial conviction is obtained, the evidence later is deemed to have been obtained illegally, without a search warrant. The ruling is thus overturned, and a guilty man is set free after having been in jail for only a small portion of his sentence of eight years. Also, his wealthy grandfather has passed away while he's been in jail, leaving him millions of dollars. He knows that, although he's received counseling and therapy for his bipolar manic depression, there's not a cure for it, and he might again succumb and rape other women in the future. Ben Nightingale knows it, too, and with Erica in an asylum, maybe taken away from him forever, and the man who raped her now being set free to once again prey on society, he comes up with a twisted plan for revenge.

Ultimate Revenge: Involuntary Transsexual is sure to provoke a visceral response in its readers. Nobody wants to see someone get away with having committed a terrible crime like rape almost scot free, but also most males reading the book will likely cringe at the extent Ben nightingale goes to for revenge, not wanting to imagine something like that happening to themselves. The author, Herman Franck, is a seasoned attorney who has somehow also found the time to write several excellent novels and screenplays, and he knows that our judicial system is not perfect, and that unfortunately, sometimes innocent people are imprisoned and guilty ones are set free after brief jail stints or are never convicted in the first place. Like John Grisham, Franck often includes in his novels, as he does here, realistic gritty portrayals of courtroom scenes. A couple of examples of novels in which he does this are The Noble Prizener and The Post Debutante. If you're already a fan of Herman Franck's novels, or you like to read suspenseful novels of retribution and revenge, then you should run out and get a copy of Ultimate Revenge: Involuntary Transsexual today!

Stereotyping of the worst kind
By Mark M
This story has absolutely zero depth. It is especially insulting in his generalizations and absolutely irrational stereotyping. The incredibly insightful reporter, the ease of finding the rapist, the honorable grandfather, a treatable genetic mood disorder that somehow makes one person in a family commit suicide and turns two others into rapists. Catching the rapist having him just admit everything.

The author would have been far better off to not even try to include a plot as he failed completely. At least when creating a plot try to do some research before writing and show a little respect to the reader.

Vengence is mine
By Samuel Rafael
Not perfect by any means, but an interesting and exciting novel that moved me to tears. The author provides an authentic and flowing view of the workings and shortcomings of our legal system, but falls a bit short with some glaring inaccuracies in his knowledge of the transgender arena, particularly the effects of female hormones. All-in-all, if one suspends disbelief a bit, this is a very worthwhile read, graphic and full of insight about the law, sex offenders, psychology and the double-edge sword of exacting revenge.

Spokan Falls, known as the “Capital of the Inland Empire,” was named after the Spokan Indians and the picturesque falls. In 1891, the name was changed to Spokane. The town thrived as a result of the abundant waters of the Spokane River, which powered saw and grain mills, and lured major transcontinental railways to Spokane in 1881. In 1889, a fire destroyed the downtown area, but like a forest after a fire, the town enjoyed growth and resurgence soon after. Spokane would attract people as diverse as Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, Calamity Jane, Billy Sunday, and Charles Lindbergh. Easterners found that its four seasons and profusion of scenic city parks gave them a place to ensure their destiny.

Small and assumes you already know the history.
By Sean E. Henderson
I mistook this book for another more in depth book. This one, is relatively short and assumes that you already know who the people pictured are and why they are significant. I've lived in Spokane for about 10 yrs now and wanted to explore the history of my community. I'd like to say this is a good entry-level picture based history book, but without a greater explanation of who the people and places are, it's just a book of interesting pictures.

A great book on early Spokane . . .
By D. T. Jewett
I am originally from the eastern U.S. So I am always interested in how the western U.S. evolved - because the western U.S. is such a different culture. With words and pictures, this book captures the history of Spokane; and does it in a way that brings the era and the region very close to me.

I love this book. I bought several copies and gave to my friends.

I highly recommend it!

The classic first short stories in the robot series.
By R. D. Allison (dallison@biochem.med.ufl.edu)
This is a collection of nine classic short stories about robots, each of which appeared previously in a pulp SF magazine. The stories contain Asimov's famous three "laws" of robotics as well as the positronic brain (consisting of a platinum/iridium sponge), now quite familiar with "Star Trek" fans. All of these have been great influences in both science and science fiction: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm; 2) A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law; and 3) A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First and Second Laws. It should also be noted that Asimov coined the word "robotics" in these stories, a term very common today. I really enjoyed these when I first read them as a teenager (my father had introduced me to Asimov's works). And, now rereading them many years later, I can understand why I enjoyed them. They are straight-forward science fiction in which a problem is presented and a solution posed. The first story, "Robbie," first appeared in 1940 (when Asimov 20 years old) in a slightly different form as "Strange Playfellow." Robbie is a companion robot for a child and the child's mother is apprehensive in allowing her daughter to play with it. "Runaround" (1942) is a story concerning a problem encountered by two trouble-shooters on a mining operation on the surface of Mercury. A robot has been given orders to retrieve some ore yet keeps walking in circles, to the detriment of the two human workers. They come to the conclusion that the problem lies with the three Laws and they have to find a solution. (This type of story [that is, of a problem presented needing a solution] becomes a common format for Asimov's science fiction and mystery stories.) In "Reason" (1941) the two trouble-shooters of the previous story are still on Mercury and have to reason with a robot who has been designed to take over the mining operation and energy conversion plant on Mercury. The robot has come to a conclusion that humans did not construct him and that his role is to serve the "Master" (the conversion apparatus). In "Catch That Rabbit" (1944), the two trouble shooters are on an asteroid attempting to train a robot that has control over six subsidiary robots. For some unknown reason, the robot ceases to function properly if no human is watching. "Liar!" (1941) is a story about a robot, still subject to the Three Laws, that can read minds. In "Little Lost Robot" (1947) a robot, which has had its first law modified, has hidden itself among sixty-two other robots and it has to be found. In "Escape!" (1945), a robot has to design an interstellar ship that may be hazardous to humans; yet, design it without violating the first law. "Evidence" (1946) is a story concerned with the problem of identifying a possible humaniform robot hiding itself among humans. The final short story, "The Evitable Conflict" (1950), takes place several years after the others on an Earth where much of human economics is directed through massive robot machines. There have been apparent stoppages and unexpected delays and the human overseers have to find out why. This story actually introduces the "Zeroeth Law" of Robotics: "No machine may harm humanity; or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm."

Sci-fi classic - but you knew that
By Wormer
Classic Asimov, I'm not sure what you say that hasn't been said in the what - 60+ years it's been published. If you like Sci-fi, if you like Asimov, if you want to help fill in some of the background to reading the Foundation series or some of the other subjects that intertwine in later novels, this is one of them you go to.

I guess there is a point to make for reading it (or even re-reading it) in 2016 - we're talking about robots today, in our real-lives, in our near future. We're talking about sentience and capabilities and concerns on their independence and impact they'll have on our lives - it's amazing how much Asimov truly anticipated how it'd develop and put out a lot of the concerns and questions to consider. It is a timely read of the topic.

A fictional pre-history of Robotics
By Adam L. Kopcinski
Isaac Asimov's I Robot is a collection of nine short stories chronicling the history of robotics, as told by Susan Calvin - a robopsychologist - to an enquiring, faceless news man. The premise is merely preamble; its purpose the correlation of nine individual stories, previously published in a couple of sci-fi magazines. They feature the same recurring cast of characters, and as such reference and build upon one another.
Each individual story is entertaining, and sequentially, each introduces another aspect of robotics, or elucidates some greater point of robotic logic/reasoning. Much like the Foundation novels (and Asimov's fiction in general, I'm beginning to suspect) the stories deal with situations; problems and solutions. The great fun of reading Asimov is watching his fictional characters encounter crisis and work through them - extrapolating, deducting, improvising - whatever need be. And the solutions - besides being entertaining - are usually quite clever! It's sometimes hard to believe that one man could write so many clever stories...
Plotting aside, you can't help but fall in love with some of Asimov's characters. The "field" team of Mike Donavan and Gregory Powell are an endearing comedic duo. Susan Calvin is almost as cold and calculating as her robots, but is forced to reveal her tender, human emotions in LIAR! And the politician Stephen Byerley makes quite an impression...
Naturally, being a collection of short stories rather than a novel proper, some stories are stronger than others. RUNAROUND, REASON, LIAR, and EVIDENCE are particularly strong, well THE EVITABLE CONFLICT is a little weak, and serves more as a talking point or epilogue - much in the same way that ROBBIE serves as a whimsical introduction. Regardless, all nine stories do entertain you, and at the very least, introduce some interesting point on robotics. Highly recommended - Asimov remains an essential read to anyone with a passing interest in Science-Fiction.
Consequently, this book has almost nothing to do with the Will Smith movie of same title - save for the three laws of robotics, and character's names - so, be warned, you've been advised!
