old-fashioned and predictable, but still a fun read

I read this story as a teenager, had fond memories of it, and only recently began searching for the title on the internet. I'm glad to have found it! Unfortunately, my experience reading it as a thirty-something married woman is very different from my experience reading it as a naive sixteen year old. The story is simple, and something out of every girl's secret fantasy: Samantha has been in love with her gorgeous boss, Guy, for five years, but he barely notices she exists. Then he admits to her that he wants a child of his own, without any romantic entanglements, and Samantha offers herself up as the surrogate. It's preposterous, but I do kind of like preposterous. What I didn't like was how much of a misogynist Guy is, especially in the way he treats Samantha. The way he talks to her! "I'm taking a nap in my office. Wake me up in a few hours, won't you, Sam, like a good girl?" I'm all about dominating romance heroes, but this guy was way over the top. He was also irritatingly oblivious in some respects. All the same, I truly enjoyed the writing, and I definitely liked the predictability of the story. Who doesn't want the shy, retiring secretary to be the one who tames the hot playboy? Who doesn't love a scene where the prim and proper heroine lets her hair loose and transforms into a sexy siren? This Kindle read was definitely worth the 2 bucks I paid.

What in the tar hill was that....

No, no, and NO. This story was so sappy and ridiculous. I guess if you're interested in reading about dribbling idiots with no purpose then this book is for you. I usually like this author but she missed the mark with this story.

A great story from 1992!

Samantha had been Guy's assistant for a few years, and had been in love with him after the first year working for him. It was quite an ordeal to see him date many women throughout those years, and she reached the point where she decided that she should hand in her resignation. And she does. But he refuses to accept it!
Then, Guy's father had a heart attack, which made Guy, the ultimate bachelor man, reconsider his stance on children, knowing that if he ever lost his father, he would be left on his own. So, while sharing his thoughts with Sam, he asks her, her wonderful assistant, to find her the perfect woman for the position: somebody not looking for marriage, but willing to share a child with him. And, of course, she jumps at the chance!
I read this story for the first time in Spanish, over 20 years ago. It was one of my all-time-favorites, and that's why I bought it as soon as I recognized the characters so I could read it in English, the original story written by wonderful Miranda Lee.
The first thing I noticed is that it was written totally from Samantha's point of view, sharing very little of what Guy was thinking, although there is one part in one scene where the focus is on him, only as a spectator, not of his point of view. The story is from 1992, and I guess the parameters were different back then, yet, Miranda managed to deliver hot sex scenes without being too descriptive.
I gave the story 5 stars because judging if by today's standards wouldn't be fair and, after all, it is one of my all-time-favorites for a reason. :D)
